Koh Chang, known as Thailand’s “Elephant Island”, is a tropical paradise nestled in the Gulf of Thailand (Elephant = Chang in Thai). With lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, small villages, and idyllic beaches, this island is perfect for travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and a taste of authentic Thai culture. Whether you’re a backpacker, couple, family, or solo explorer, Koh Chang promises memorable experiences at every turn. Let’s dive into everything you need to know for an unforgettable journey!

Getting There: How to Reach Koh Chang

Reaching Koh Chang is part of the adventure! Most visitors start their journey in Bangkok. From Suvarnabhumi Airport, take a bus or shared minivan to the ferry piers in Trat Province—Laem Ngop, Ao Thammachat, or Centre Point. The ride takes around 5-6 hours. Buses and minivans can be booked from Bangkok’s Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) or from tourist agencies. If you prefer to fly, Bangkok Airways operates daily flights to Trat Airport (about an hour). From Trat, taxis or shared songthaews bring you to the ferry (about 30 minutes). Ferries run frequently and take 30-45 minutes to cross to the island.

If you travel by your own car you can bring the car onto the island. The nearby islands like Koh Kood and Koh Mak don’t offer this. Koh Chang is bigger and having your own transport can be convenient but is not absolutely necessary.

Tip: Consider arranging a combined ticket (bus + ferry) for a seamless trip.

Where to Stay: Accommodation Options

Koh Chang offers a spectrum of stays to suit every style and budget. Choose from rustic beachfront bungalows, chic boutique resorts, lively hostels, and luxury hotels. The west coast hosts most of the action and accommodation, while the east and south offer quieter escapes. For a social vibe, Lonely Beach and White Sand Beach are favorites among backpackers and party-goers. Families and couples may prefer Klong Prao or Kai Bae for a more serene atmosphere. In the north and east, guesthouses and eco-lodges provide a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature.

North Koh Chang: Gateway and Natural Wonders

Arriving at the island’s northern tip, you’ll encounter the port villages of Ao Sapparot and Dan Kao. These laid-back gateways offer a glimpse of local life, with fisherman’s huts, small temples, and quiet shorelines. Don’t miss the Klong Son area, home to waterfalls like Than Mayom and Klong Jao Leuam, perfect for a refreshing dip and jungle trek. The north is less touristy, making it ideal for unwinding and exploring traditional Thai culture.

East Koh Chang: Local Culture and Hidden Gems

East Koh Chang is the island’s underrated side, with a slower pace and unspoiled charm. Explore mangrove forests and fishing villages like Salak Khok and Salak Phet, where you can paddle a kayak through tranquil canals. Visit the Buddhist temple Wat Salak Phet, steeped in history and local legend. The east is dotted with fviewpoints overlooking the sea—bring your camera! For adventurous souls, the lesser-known Than Mayom Waterfall or a rustic homestay offer unique experiences far from the crowds.

South Koh Chang: Tranquil Retreats and Stunning Views

The south is perfect for those craving solitude and panoramic vistas. Bang Bao is a picturesque fishing village built on stilts, with cozy waterfront guesthouses and seafood restaurants. Walk the iconic pier, shop for handicrafts, or hop on a boat tour to nearby islands. Don’t miss the sweeping views from viewpoints above Bang Bao and on the road toward the island’s tip. Adventurers might hire a scooter to explore remote beaches like Wai Chek, or join a snorkeling tour to crystal-clear bays.

Most visitors gravitate to the west coast for its famous beaches and vibrant nightlife. White Sand Beach is lively, lined with bars, cafes, and shops, while Klong Prao and Kai Bae offer palm-fringed sands and laid-back vibes.
