If you’re looking for a day trip that’s off the beaten path near Pattaya or Jomtien, let me introduce you to a true hidden gem: Samae San Island. While most visitors to the region may never set foot here, those who do are rewarded with pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a tranquil atmosphere that’s worlds away from the crowds.
Where Is Samae San Island?
Samae San Island is a small, well-preserved island located in the Sattahip District of Chonburi Province, Thailand. Managed by the Royal Thai Navy, the island is strictly protected, which helps maintain its natural beauty and pristine look. Please note: overnight stays are not permitted, so it’s strictly a day-trip destination.
What Can You Do on Samae San Island?
There’s plenty to keep you entertained during your visit:
- Snorkelling: Explore vibrant coral reefs and spot colourful marine life.
- Glass-bottom boat rides: Perfect for those who want to see underwater wonders without getting wet.
- Kayaking and biking: Enjoy the island’s scenic trails and coastline at your own pace.
- Swimming: While the island boasts five beaches, swimming is only allowed at Hat Thien and Hat Luk Lom. These two beaches are renowned for their white sand, clear water, and impressive coral reefs—a testament to the island’s effective conservation efforts.
Facilities are thoughtfully provided, including snorkel sets, life jackets, bathrooms, showers, and places to eat, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable day out.
How to Get There
Access to Samae San Island is carefully controlled to protect its delicate ecosystem. Only 500 visitors are allowed each day, and there are no advance tickets. To secure your spot, you’ll need to buy a ticket at the reception building of the Natural History Museum at Khao Mar Jor pier (open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). It can get busy, so they hand out queue cards. These queue cards are handed out from 6 a.m., so it’s wise to arrive early, especially during weekends or holidays.

Ko Kham
The island of Ko Kham is nearby and boats to this island depart from the same pier. This smaller island is extremely popular as well. To go there you have to plan to arrive probably even earlier to get a chance to visit the Ko Kham island.
