If you’re a travel enthusiast or a nature lover looking for your next adventure, Kaeng Krachan National Park should be high on your list. With its lush forests, rich wildlife, and a mix of camping and nearby accommodation options, this park is a paradise for those wanting to get close to nature.

History of Kaeng Krachan National Park

Kaeng Krachan National Park is not just Thailand’s largest national park; it’s also one of its most significant. Established in 1981, the park extends across nearly 3,000 square kilometers, stretching from Phetchaburi to the border with Myanmar. Over the years, it has played a crucial role in conservation, helping protect a vast range of habitats and species. In 2021, Kaeng Krachan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, underlining its global importance as a biodiversity hotspot and a sanctuary for rare and endangered wildlife.

Wildlife

The park is famous for its breathtaking biodiversity. Birdwatchers flock here to catch glimpses of hornbills, broadbills, and the elusive long-tailed broadbill and so many more. We had just entered the park when the first two hornbills just flew low over the street into the forest on the other side. It was far too fast to be able to capture this on photo. But on the way back we were lucky enough to see a few more higher up in the trees. What an amazing bird.

Mammal lovers might spot dusky langurs, stump-tailed macaques, or even wild elephants roaming the dense forest. Reptiles, butterflies, and an incredible variety of insects add to the magic, making each walk or tour a new adventure. Around the camp site, near the stream we found a large amount of butterflies grouping together on the ground.

Guided tours – exploring with the experts

One of the best ways to discover Kaeng Krachan is through guided tours. Options range from half-day birdwatching walks to full-day wildlife safaris. Knowledgeable local guides help you spot animals you would otherwise miss. If you’re staying at a nearby lodge, such as Baan Maka Nature Lodge, you can also book personalized tours tailored to your interests and fitness level. Pre-booking is recommended, especially in high season. We stayed at the Baan Maka Nature Lodge and had booked our tour with a guide directly from the accommodation.
