Just an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai, tucked into the lush, forest covered mountains of the Mae On district, lies the enchanting village of Mae Kampong. The village is a serene, over 100-year-old community, offering a cool climate and a charming, unhurried pace of life.
The Vibe & The Look

Picture a village where time seems to slow down. Mae Kampong is a collection of rustic, traditional wooden stilt houses built right into the hillside, surrounded by thick jungle. A refreshing stream runs right through the heart of the village, creating a soothing soundtrack for your entire visit. It’s a photographer’s dream, with its winding road and a tangible sense of old-world charm blending seamlessly with a chic, modern cafe culture.

What to Do: Slow Living & Scenic Views
Forget the typical tourist checklist; here, the key is to slow down.
- Cafe Hopping: Mae Kampong is a mecca for coffee lovers. Start your day with a coffee in one of the many cafes. Don’t miss Rabeing View Cafe for a stunning bird’s-eye view of the village, or venture slightly further to The Giant Chiang Mai, a famous treehouse cafe built around an enormous tree for the ultimate Instagram shot.
- Chase Waterfalls: Take a short, gentle walk from the main street to the multi-tiered Mae Kampong Waterfall. The air here is crisp, cool, and perfect for recharging.
- Hike to Kew Fin Viewpoint: For the best panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains—especially magical at sunrise or sunset—hire a local driver to take you to the famous Kew Fin Viewpoint.
- Explore Local Life: Wander through the quaint street, past the local temple (Wat Mae Kampong), and pop into the small shops selling local handicrafts and Miang (fermented tea leaves), a local delicacy.

Eat & Stay
- Dining: Embrace the local flavors! Seek out the small restaurants nestled along the stream. They offer open-air porch seating and serve up delicious Northern Thai (Lanna) cuisine, often made with locally grown, organic ingredients. Look out for the famous spicy Sai-ua sausage.

- Accommodation: The nice way to experience the village is by staying in a local homestay. These simple but cozy wooden houses, often run by local families, offer an authentic experience, sometimes including a light breakfast and a chance to learn about their traditional way of life. For something more boutique, look for eco-lodges or guesthouses with streamside balconies. We stayed just a bit outside of the village at the beautiful and relaxing The Stream House.

Getting There & Parking
- Location: Mae Kampong is about 50 km (approx. 1 hour) east of Chiang Mai city.
- Transportation:
- By Car/Motorbike: The drive is beautiful but features some winding and sometimes steep roads.
- By Minivan: The most popular hassle-free option is the minivan shuttle from Chiang Mai (often leaving from the Warorot Market area). The trip takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
- By Taxi/Private Driver: A fast and convenient option, but significantly more expensive.
- Parking: Parking is limited, especially on weekends. It’s best to arrive early in the morning. There are designated village parking lots near the entrance. If you’re staying overnight, your homestay or hotel may offer a spot, but otherwise, you’ll need to use the central paid parking areas and explore the village on foot. We chose this last option which turned out be very convenient.
